♥ MEET THE LWA SERIES AT ERZULIE’S VOODOO – VODOU LWA: DANBALA WEDO
♥ PRACTITIONER-LED INSIGHTS INTO THE SPIRITS OF HAITIAN VODOU!
Welcome to our Meet the Lwa series. Each page offers a brief overview of the Lwa’s origins, attributes, and ceremonial roles—designed for spiritual students, researchers, and practitioners seeking clarity and context.
These teachings were passed down to me by my elder Mambos, spiritual godparents, and our beloved Hougan Aboudja, in collaboration with Hougan Jour Mwen Lonje, whose lifelong service and deep initiatory knowledge continue to guide our work.
As the founder and Vodou practitioner of Erzulie’s Voodoo New Orleans, I created this archive to share the foundational aspects of each spirit with respect, accuracy (from our Vodou house’s perspective), and spiritual devotion. Every detail—from Veve symbols to ritual offerings—has been curated to reflect the integrity of our tradition and the legacy of those who came before us.
♥ Danbala Wedo: Serpent of Wisdom, Wealth & Fresh Waters
Danbala Wedo is the “oldest of the old”—the father of the Lwa and the oldest ancestor of the living. He represents wisdom, purity, and coolness, and is associated with the sun and fresh water springs. Danbala is also a Lwa of vast riches and spiritual elevation. He is husband to Ayida Wedo, Sila Wedo, and Ezili Freda.
♥ Symbols & Attributes
Serpent, an egg, and the sun.
♥ Colors
Pure white; white and light blue, white and green, and all colors (milokan).
♥ Sacred Spaces
Altar: Source of springs
Altar Trees: Royal Palm (Roystonea Regia), Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea Glabra)
♥ Sacred Animal

♥ Sacrificial Animals

♥ Offerings
White or white and green cake, rice pudding, porridge (labouwi), sweet corn pudding, fried ripe plantain dusted with sugar, bananas, sweet oranges, fried egg—all served on white china. The quintessential offering to Danbala is a flawless egg dimpled in white flour on a white saucer or plate. Also offered: white flowers (especially jasmine and rose), and the perfume Lotion Pompeia.
♥ Ritual Drinks
Sweet almond syrup (almondine), milk, and champagne.
♥ Veneration Day & Luminary
Thursday
White candle; lamp fueled with pure olive or almond oil.
♥ Catholic Saint Counterpart
St. Patrick
♥ Characteristics & Manifestations
Danbala abides neither filth nor heat. He does not speak, but whistles and utters a staccato “KE-KE-KE,” which Ogou Feray interprets. When possessed by Danbala, the servitor falls to the ground, writhes like a snake, and consumes the raw egg dimpled in flour. His presence is serene, ancient, and deeply sacred.
